Testing the system
December 3, 2007 by HMS dauntless

Just testing the system. And what better than the infamous Admiraly Rodney’s portrait for a proper naval start ?
This is me testing the “more” tag: curious to see if and how it works.

Hello! I found you
It’s looking good already
just attempting to understand if doing this I’m replying to your comment or to myself…
You’re replying generally, and when I come along I can guess that it’s a reply to me
I think that if I want to be notified when you post a reply I have to click on the Trackback URI or Comments feed. If I don’t do that, I just have to occasionally check back to see if you replied.
Oh, and I like the banner a lot!
Thank you, I’m so glad you like it !
It’s the aerial view of 1758 Port Royal from the NMM online gallery I once posted on LJ. Thought it perfectly summarized my interests. *G*
For the comments you left here I got mail warnings, exactly as I did in LJ and I discovered I can set the language of the WP system in Italian without affecting the aspect of the blog, which is of great help to guide me through the function of the different options. So maybe, things are not so bad as I was thinking yesterday evening, after a stressfull Monday at work.
LJ has lots of fascinating features, but they are really of use only if you’re involved in some mainstream fandom. When – as it is for me at present – your f-list is mostly composed of people you don’t share any interest with any more, there are only a few persons you really want to keep in touch with, and – last but not least – your time is very limited and there are days you must choose between spending all your free time reading and writing mails or working on your own story, well… maybe WP is a brilliant solution to focus on the issues and persons I’m really interested in.
Technical question: is there anything similar to the lj-cut function to wrap long posts ?

That’s exactly it for me too. The fandom that I’m interested in has pretty much already disappeared. My FL is full of things I’m not interested in, and I simply can’t keep up with commenting on things like people’s cats and so on
Besides, I found your comment here through the Blog Surfer thing, which does seem to work enough like a FL for me to cope with the differences.
I’m glad that you’re getting to grips with WordPress now. It is very different and it does take a while to adapt. It certainly did with me, anyway!
Yes, there is a lj cut equivalent. When you’re typing your post, it’s the button at the top of the text box which looks like a very square letter i with a dotted line between the top and bottom. (Only visible if you’re using the ‘Visual’ editor rather than the ‘Code’ one.)
Oh and I meant to say ‘yay, Port Royal!’ I’ve set part of ‘Secrets’ there, so it now looks as though I’ll have to research it after all
Thank you so much for the invaluable help ! I’ve managed to conquer both the infamous more tag and the Blog Surfer, which is actually the same as a f-list, so yay for WordPress ! Today a messed a bit with the Info page, and it was rather educational. *G* I’ve even devised a simple way to put icons in my posts. Do you know if there is a way to put images in replies, too ?
Yes, the fandom I used to know and love is no longer there. This is saddening but, on the other hand, I’d rather see my fav characters fall into oblivion than survive trasformed into something I dislike. Moreover, I think that it’s not that people stopped to like AoS characters. It’s just that, after the sequels and all the related wank, the LJ communites focused on the POTC fandom ceased to be a pleasant and interesting place for persons with tastes similar to mine.
Do you know, I’m starting to think this blog is just the right home for my Conversation in Port Royal.
The Blog surfer seems like a great thing. And you can do the equivalent of searching on interests with the Tag surfer. Also I like the fact that you can add outside sites to your blogroll, by pasting the URL into ‘Add Bookmarks’. That’s better than LJ
I think that PotC and the AoS just parted company. At least, they did for those people for whom the AoS is all about the Age of Enlightenment, and the reason and heroism which is symbolized by the navy. There obviously is something very basic in many people which is touched by the thought of pirates – but it’s not in any way the same thing that touches us about the AoS. CotBP had both and therefore appealed to fans of both, but DMC and AWE only had the piratey bit, so it’s not surprising that the fandom has developed into something which no longer caters for both.
I think this blog would be a great home for the Conversation! There’s something very elegant about the setting which would suit it

– smaller (and less interesting).
You hit the nail’s head here. I had not thought of it in this terms, but you’re perfectly right. And this supports my opinion that there is no way the fandom can be brought back to what it was and there is no place for AoS fans in it. CotBP had sort of a friendly wink for both pirates and officers, but the sequels, with their pretension at making a pirate epic, made the world – or I should say the seas
About WP, another thing I like is that, if you post a reply in your blog, you’re allowed to edit it afterwards.
Elegant setting for my fic ? That’s very kind of you. Must confess I’m liking more and more the quiet of this place. I’m here, surrounded by the things and persons I like, talking and joking about the things I like. What can be better ?
